The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence

Five works at a single point in the city, the first acquired in November 2024 and the most recent in February 2026; three of them have since been accessioned into the permanent collection. One commissioner: Parks & Recreation. The museum did not solicit any of them.

The works are exhibited in order of acquisition. Visitors will notice that the subject does not change; the museum invites them to consider what does.

1. The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence, No. 6 — Mature conifer, descended limb, leaf litter, low sun. Accession 17265796. Acquired November 11, 2024. 675 days on view. The work is organized around a single lower limb that has parted from the trunk and now descends in a long curve until its needled end meets the leaf litter, still attached at the break and still holding green. Low sun passes through the upper canopy and leaves the trunk and the failed branch in flat silhouette, while the bench beyond stands fully lit, a lightness that sets off the mass above it. Within the sequence this is the passage in which the limb has come nearest the ground without releasing, and the museum preserves it for the clarity of that suspension.
2. The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence, No. 9 — Acrylic court surfacing, hairline fracture network, sodium light at dusk. Accession 17993123. Acquired August 16, 2025. 397 days on view. A single hairline fracture enters at the lower left and travels diagonally beneath the painted baseline, which has been laid over it without interruption, so that the white band continues cleanly across a surface that no longer does. The acrylic coating has faded unevenly toward grey, and the amber floodlights overhead have begun to register more strongly than the remaining daylight. Set against earlier works in the sequence, the crack network here reads as broader and more branched, its finer lines now reaching the service area. The museum preserves the passage where paint and fracture cross as the clearest statement of the series.
3. The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence, No. 10 — Grape vine, concrete walkway, turf margin, overcast light. Accession 18001196. Acquired August 20, 2025. 393 days on view. Vine growth has advanced across the concrete from the right, reducing the walkway to a tapering wedge that narrows further toward the tree line in the background. Pale flower clusters sit at the leading edge of the mass, and the damp pavement carries a scattering of fallen brown leaves already shed from the upper canopy. Read against the earlier works in the sequence, in which the same edge appears as bare cane and open concrete, this entry documents the field at its fullest extension. The museum preserves it as the summer terminus of a cycle otherwise recorded in dormancy.
4. The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence, No. 11 — Construction debris, polyethylene sheeting, porcelain fixture, lawn. Accession 18662110. Acquired October 29, 2025. 323 days on view. The mound is bound less by containment than by drape: black polyethylene has slackened over the lumber beneath it, taking the shape of what it covers rather than concealing it. At the left margin a white porcelain pedestal sink stands fully upright on the grass, level and unbroken, its verticality the only thing in the composition that has not collapsed toward the horizontal. Read against earlier works in the sequence, the surrounding turf remains green and closely cut to the very edge of the deposit, so that the boundary between lawn and accumulation is a clean line rather than a worn one. The museum preserves the piece for that line.
5. The Unbroken Field, Winter Sequence, No. 12 — Compacted snow, chain-link, low winter sun. Accession 19512285. Acquired February 3, 2026. 226 days on view. Low sun enters from the right and crosses the walkway at a shallow angle, warming the crest of the plowed mound to cream while the hollows hold blue. The surface has been compacted underfoot and refrozen into a rough topography of ridges and cavities, and the chain-link fence runs its full length without interruption, narrowing the passage to a single irregular channel. Read against the earlier works in the series, the composition is notable for its uniformity: no cleared margin survives anywhere in the frame. The museum preserves this entry as the sequence's most complete instance of a surface reclaimed in full.
