Standing Specimen, Leafless Among Canopy

The work rises from the verge as a pale vertical, its bark bleached to grey and its crown reduced to a fine lattice of bare branches, one upper limb snapped to a blunt stub. Every tree around it carries full summer foliage, and that surrounding green has the effect of isolating the specimen entirely, rendering its lack of leaf a matter of contour rather than season. A stump in the foreground repeats the same material at a different stage. The museum preserves the piece for the precision with which it holds its own silhouette against a sky it no longer filters.

Undercut, with Volunteer Grasses

The composition is organised by a cavity: beneath the curb face the asphalt has pulled back into shadow, leaving a low chamber deep enough to hold litter and to shelter a tuft of grass that has rooted where nothing was planted. Above it the concrete remains bright and intact except for a hairline crack that travels from the square grate to the round iron cover, linking the two apertures into a single line. White spray paint sweeps around the opening in the roadway, an applied gesture that reads, in the museum's view, as the work's only mark of authorship. The institution preserves it for the rare clarity with which a surface declares the absence underneath it.

Recumbent Boundary, with Plantings

The composition is organised by a single line of galvanised mesh that begins vertical and ends horizontal, descending across the frame until it rests on the concrete lip at the edge of the lot. Someone has planted along that lip, and the small flowers and flags stand just above the flattened fabric of the fence, so that the two gestures occupy the same narrow strip of soil. Read as a still life, the work pairs a boundary that has surrendered its height with an act of ornament that proceeds regardless. The museum preserves it for the clarity of that adjacency, which no single element could supply alone.

The Yielding Perimeter

Point Breeze

The mesh has pulled free of its upper rail and settled into a long shallow curve, lying almost flat where it meets the rubberised surfacing and rising again only at the far post. Leaf litter has banked along the fallen span and drifted across the blue-green granules, marking the fence's new line more clearly than the fence itself. The museum preserves the work for this reversal: the barrier is now the lowest element in the composition, and the path beyond it reads as continuous with the play surface it was built to divide.
